The vast majority of people we speak to have never been through the court system before, and most will never go through it again once their case is over. That means that most people don't know about the direct access scheme for barristers, because it's not well known. And that's a real shame, because it is an incredibly cost-effective way to get legal help right when you need it, but without all of the overheads associated with law firms.
Under the direct access scheme, members of the public can instruct a barrister directly without instructing a solicitor first. In our experience, a lot only find direct access barristers towards the end of their case, and often when things have become a little much.
Here are three ways you can use direct access barristers to get the best outcome available in your particular case.
A successful case starts with the right advice. It's well worth obtaining comprehensive advice at the very outset of your case.
That advice can put you on the right track early on and prevent you from wasting time, money, and effort on a plan that is bound to fail.
All of our barristers can be instructed directly to provide advice, and usually with a short turnaround of 7-10 days.
If your case has already reached court then you'll be expected to comply with a large number of deadlines that require a lot of different documents to be sent to the court and the other side.
You might be able to have a good guess about how to write a witness statement, but how do you know how to make sure it contains everything you need so that your evidence is accepted by the court? And what about directions questionnaires? And disclosure?
All of our barristers can complete these pieces of work for you. If you find that you're more comfortable with some pieces of paperwork than others, then you pick and choose what you get your barrister to do and you can save money as a result.
Of course, most people want to have a barrister to use their expertise in addressing the court and putting your best case forwards.
